Settlers burn an agricultural room in the town of Al-Zawiya in the Salfit Governorate

Violation: Burning an agricultural room and damaging its contents

Description:

On Tuesday afternoon, August 20, 2024, a group of settlers set fire to an agricultural room located in the western part of the town of Zawiya, west of Salfit Governorate, in the area known as "Khillat Hamad."

The settlers took advantage of the absence of farmers in the area and set fire to the agricultural room, which quickly burned down completely. The room, which had an area of 42 m², was built with brick walls and a zinc roof. The fire destroyed all the contents of the agricultural room, including agricultural equipment and household items.

The damaged agricultural room belongs to farmer Aziz Rida Shaqir, who supports a family of eight, including three females and five children.

The Khillat Hamad area is located near the "Kanasettlement, which is situated on the outskirts of the town. In previous years, settlers have burned large areas of land in the same area, using the same method.

Overview of Zawiya Town:

Zawiya is located in the western part of Salfit Governorate, specifically 17 km west of Salfit city, and is adjacent to the Green Line. The population reached 4,754 people by 2007. About 81% of the population depends on agriculture and livestock farming, while the rest work in government and private sector jobs. The total area of Zawiya is 12,000 dunams, with 693 dunams designated for building purposes. Most of the agricultural land in Zawiya is planted with olive trees, cactus, and figs.

Zawiya is home to three main families: Shaqir, Muqadi, and Raddad, which together make up 95% of the population. The remaining 5% are smaller families of refugee origin, including the Rabi family. Zawiya is one of the Palestinian towns that has faced and continues to face organized campaigns by the Israeli occupation. The town has lost 1,747 dunams of land to settlement and the separation wall, distributed as follows:

  • 630 dunams were confiscated for Israeli settlements, including two settlements: "Metsoratiqah," established in 1986 and occupying 573 dunams of Zawiya's land, and "Kana," established in 1977 and occupying 57 dunams, with 3,050 settlers living there.
  • 520 dunams were taken for the Route 5 bypass road.
  • In 2003, the occupation built a separation wall on the village's land, destroying 597 dunams and isolating 4,228 dunams.
