Huwwara village council head Nassir Al-Huwari told LRC reporter:

“ Monday, April 8th 2019, we found a military order hanged on an olive tree in Huwwara, it informed the seizure of lands belong to 7 villages south Nablus, in order to open a bypass road that will devour 406 dunums .

The project will dominate about 95 % of the town’s lands, most of them are agricultural lands seasonally cultivated wheat and a variety of vegetables, while the rest are partially peopled.

The road opening will affect hundreds of families.  And according to Israeli sources, the opening of the road will cost about 250 million shekels. Al-Hawari confirmed that number of protests will be organized against the implementation of the project.

Nabil Hamdan from Bita municipality told LRC reporter:

“Implementing the road will require the demolition of number of industrial facilities in the area. We will organize a meeting in Huwwara municipality for the affected villages.”

According to the Geographical information unit in LRC , the implementation of the road will destroy 178 dunums of olive groves, 69 dunums of agricultural lands seasonally cultivated a variety of crops, and 159 dunums of arable lands.

Nevertheless, Al-Huwwara bypass will halt natural urban expansion  in Huwwara village from the eastern area, and block hundreds of dunums of agricultural lands between bypass 60 and the new road. In addition, movement between Orata, Odala, Bita and the eastern villages will be more complicated than ever, and the occupation will turn about 150 m on the sides of the road into closed zones. I.e. farmers are not allowed to use them.

Legal feedback:

Israeli Seizure of Palestinian lands for the sake of providing facilities for illegal settlers, can only be regarded as a clear violation of international conventions and agreements, Such as article 2 of The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights:

  • All peoples may, for their own ends, freely dispose of their natural wealth and resources without prejudice to any obligations arising out of international economic co-operation, based upon the principle of mutual benefit, and international law.
